Why You Might Slip Through the Cracks
With the passing of the “Inflation Reduction” bill with money earmarked to double the size of the IRS and with the search warrant that was executed on Mar-A-Lago recently, it’s become increasingly obvious to most people that the government will do everything in its power to lash out at political dissidents.
There are many schools of thought on how to react to this. To a historian, this is unsurprising as governments have been abusing citizens for eons. To a ‘red-blooded patriot’, it’s shocking to think that a government can just simply ignore the Constitution.
However you feel about it, it doesn’t matter because it likely won’t happen to you.
How can I be so sure with everything going on? The government likes to operate in much the same way that a magician does, one hand holding the shiny metal object gets all the attention while the sleight of hand occurs behind the scenes. The two events that I had mentioned at the beginning are the bits of shiny foil in the visible hand. So then what’s the sleight of hand going on behind the scenes? They don’t want you to know that government is so inept and inefficient that they cannot possibly go after all 74 million Trump voters.
However, I don’t mean to sound flippant or lure someone into a false sense of security. They most certainly will go after people. Lois Lerner’s IRS was weaponized in the early 2010’s to go after members of the Tea Party. Additionally, James O’Keefe and Project Veritas was raided by the FBI in November 2021 for the high crime of suing the New York Times and threatening discovery. What people oftentimes miss is the fact that these are the big fish that they’re planning to go after. It makes sense given they have the biggest platforms for influencing change in government and exposing corruption within the establishment. It makes much more sense to attempt to silence them versus your libertarian uncle who gets banned from Facebook for posting spicy political memes.
But should you be worried as an average individual whose political activity goes no further than a few spice-posts and possibly a campaign contribution? Well, it depends. The government wants you to think they’re omnipotent and have been tracking every move you have ever made online. The truth is that the politics within massively bloated, undertalented, and overtasked government agencies make it such that it’ll take years if you ever get tagged in what you can think of as a reverse lottery where you don’t want your number to come up. If it does, don’t necessarily think that the IRS will be sending their hit squad to collect on less than a few grand because you lost your charitable donation receipt from six years ago. In fact, be prepared for the proceedings to take forever and a day and involve paperwork, accountants, and especially your highly qualified attorney that you no doubt will retain without hesitation immediately after getting your audit notice. It might well be into the next administration when all is said and done.
The point in all of this is that it’s likely that you won’t get targeted by the clumsy, bloated, lumbering giant that is the government which spends more time tripping over itself. Yes, the 87,000 new IRS agents can max out the capacity at a stadium, but we can fill up more than 8 New York City’s with members of the wide umbrella that is the “new right”. It’s not even going to be a fair fight. Don’t let them scare you into silence. Don’t let them intimidate you out of participating in civil discourse or performing your civic duties. Go out there and live your life without fear.
